At Lakeside our individualised approach means that pupils are taught to read using a continuum of communication as a formative assessment tool. Where the pupil is on this continuum dictates what we teach them in terms of reading.
We support the growth of independence through teaching reading with functional relevance. Pupils learn to read their favourite words linked to choices first. They learn words they need for life such as “toilet” and words for different foods.
We have a few pupils who may, eventually learn to read for pleasure. We teach phonics where assessment suggest pupils will understand the concept.
Where pupils are able to add meaning to abstract learning we use the letters and sounds scheme and augment with Oxford reading tree.
