MOVE is a small charity working with parents, teachers, and therapists to help to give children more opportunities and possibilities for independent movement. In turn this can help to develop their cognitive and communication skills, and it can also improve health and social inclusion. Movement is the cornerstone to learning – we learn by exploring the world around us.
MOVE is an activity based programme which uses the combined knowledge of education, therapy and family to teach severely disabled children the skills of sitting, standing, walking and transferring to the very best of their ability. By incorporating the practise of meaningful skills into everyday life, MOVE enables families to be directly involved with their child's progress.
MOVE believes that it is everyone's right to live with dignity and the maximum level of independence.
Lakeside adopted the MOVE programme in 2009.
In July 2010 we achieved the MOVE Quality Mark - only the 5th school in Europe to achieve this accreditation.
In May 2011 we were awarded Centre of Excellence status
Lakeside has a MOVE team comprising our MOVE trainer, physiotherapists, deputy head, occupational therapist and the Move Practitioners.
Hannah Scarborough is a qualified MOVE trainer and she has trained 1 member of staff to work alongside her as a MOVE practitioners. There are people in every class team who champion the ethos of MOVE.
For pupils on the MOVE programme a meeting is held with the MOVE team and the child's parents to set long term goals and short term objectives for increased mobility and independent posture.
The MOVE ethos has permeated the school and for all children the principles of MOVE now apply - to make children as mobile as possible - not just ensuring that their wheelchairs are the best fit - but looking to find ways to get them out of their chairs and sitting, standing and walking with as little support as is possible.
